YA ficiton related to bullying- Rhyme Schemer

Rhyme Schemer by K.A. Holt Kevin Jamison is the 7th-grade big bully and his journal talks about the people he picks on, his parents are both doctors but he doesn't see himself as wealthy and he feels that no one knows he exists and even when they do it’s only to point out all his mistakes. His four older brothers are all portrayed as perfect while he is the mistake baby, and so his middle-school angst is taken out in poetry, one day when his brother throws his journal out of the car window Kevin’s reign as the school bully goes downhill. A boy named Robin who Kevin bully finds the journal and begins to post the poems inside of it all around school and Kevin goes from bullying people to being bullied. In the end, his librarian makes his family read the poetry and Kevin’s few faithful friends pull him out of the dark, and he has a happy ending.

YA fiction related to bullying- Wonder

Wonder by R.J. Palacio Wonder stars August Pullman who has been homeschooled up until middle school because of health issues and the demanding surgery schedule that goes with it, a specifically craniofacial abnormality which is a group of deformities in the growth of head and facial bones. Auggie’s parents have begun to think about the big picture and decide to send him to public school where he is greeted by three kids that are the welcome committee, Charlotte and Jack are nice, but Julian is not, and at lunchtime Auggie eats alone. Fast forward to where a girl named Summer sits with him because she feels bad for him and in the end, they end up close friends, after getting over his appearance Jack realizes that Auggie is a cool kid but lacks the confidence to stay his friend and hurts Auggie’s feelings by bad mouthing him. Anti-Bullying Highlight - ReThink

Today's spotlight is shining right on our hometown area! ReThink is an amazing app created by Nequa Valley highschool student Trisha Prabhu that challenges potential cyber bullies to rethink their words before they send a message on the internet.To quote the ReThink website   "When an adolescent tries to post an offensive message on social media, ReThink uses its sophisticated context sensitive filtering technology to determine whether or not it’s offensive and gives the adolescent a second chance to reconsider their decision. Research shows that when adolescents are alerted to ReThink their decision, they change their minds 93% of the time." Anti-Bullying Highlight - www.stopbullying.gov

StopBullying.gov is a great resource site for anyone looking to get involved with the prevention of bullying. It has lots of easy to find, detailed information about all kinds of bullying, who’s at risk, prevention, and prevention training. It also has lots of resources to help those who are being bullied find help (kind of like what we do here!) We are glad to highlight StopBullying.gov.
